Platonic Solids Sets are useful for studying isometric forms.
Plato the Pythagoras, inspired Greek philosopher and mathematician, founded his Academy in Athens in 387 BCE. Plato used mathematics as a way of understanding the mechanics of physical reality. He theorized that elements of the world were made of these basic solids. The five Platonic Solids also represent the five basic elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and the Universe.
- The tetrahedron (composed of 4 triangular faces, 6 straight edges, and 4 vertices) is associated with FIRE and perpetuates balance and stability.
- The octahedron (composed of 8 triangular faces, 12 edges, and 6 vertices) is associated with AIR and cultivating acceptance and compassion.
- The icosahedron (composed of 20 triangular faces, 30 edges, and 12 vertices) is associated with WATER and enhances creative thought and expression.
- The cube, or hexahedron (composed of 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices), is associated with the EARTH and reconnecting energy to nature.
- The dodecahedron (composed of 12 pentagonal faces, 30 edges, and 20 vertices) is associated with UNIVERSAL ENERGY and represents ether (or prana), mystery and meditation. The dodecahedron can also be seen as representing the cosmos with the twelve zodiac signs which correspond to the twelve faces of the dodecahedron.
The 7-piece sets also come with two additional shapes:
- The merkaba is associated with LIFE FORCE. “Mer” means Light, “Ka” means Spirit, “Ba” means Body. We all have an energy field shaped like a merkaba, with intersecting top and bottom tetrahedrons rotating in opposite directions. It connects us with higher dimensions and is the vehicle for channeling our immortal consciousness in mortal form.
- The sphere is associated with ALL THAT IS. The shape is symbolic of oneness, unity, wholeness, and cyclical energies. The sphere facilitates clear communication and promotes rhythm in natural cycles of energy and cosmic flow.
